Thirty-four baby turtles have been taken to Alligator Adventure for care after investigators found them in an uncovered aquarium where they were trying to get out of the unheated water by climbing onto a flip-flop sole.
Officers arrived at Palms Beach and Surf, 6613-A N. Kings Hwy., about 1:15 p.m. Friday to discover the 10-gallon aquarium on a shelf. Inside were baby red-earred pond slider turtles, about 2 to 2.5 inches long, according to the police report. The water temperature was about 76 degrees and there was no lighting or radiant heat provided for them.
“Most were lethargic ... and appeared to be covered in a fungus associated with sick turtles,” according to the police report.
More information will be posted when it becomes available.
