A Conway man died in a tractor incident on Middleton Road in Conway Monday afternoon, said Horry County Deputy Coroner Darris Fowler.

James Thompkins, 81, died from trauma due to a tractor rolling on him, Fowler said.

The accident was reported to the S.C. Highway Patrol about 1:45 p.m. at 6830 Middleton Road, off Johnson Shortcut Road, according to the agency’s website.

Fowler wasn’t sure exactly how the tractor rolled onto Thompkins, but said it occurred in a field near a roadside ditch. Fowler said the Thompkins likely got too close to the ditch causing the tractor to overturn.
