MYRTLE BEACH — Loris Elementary School students and staff started the school year Thursday with a new addition and building renovation.
The certificate of occupancy was received last week for the 34,000-square-foot space, said Principal Mark Porter, who said it is the only two-story elementary structure in Horry County. The fourth grade now occupies the downstairs area, with fifth grade upstairs, and the addition also has a gym and additional art and music rooms, he said. The new space allowed the school to remove the 13 portable units that had been used for classes until now.
“We are very blessed, and the contractors and the district worked very hard to get us in on time,” Porter said. “We are completely renovated, and everything looks brand new.”
The school also had more than 1,000 people turn out for its open house Tuesday night. The school always has a big turnout, Porter said, but the building’s tuneup probably added some extra excitement.
