A homeless man, who authorities said moved to the area earlier in the week, died Thursday after he was struck by a vehicle on U.S. 501 near Conway.

Frederick G. Steele, 78, who had moved here from Nevada, died from blunt force trauma after he was struck by the vehicle in the crash about 6 p.m. Thursday, Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick said Friday.

Troopers said the crash happened around 6 p.m. in a southbound lane of U.S. 501. Steele was walking north in a southbound lane when he was struck by a 2005 Dodge Caravan.

The pedestrian was at fault in the collision, according to the Highway Patrol, because he was walking in the traffic lane.
