MYRTLE BEACH — Drivers should expect overnight lane closures this week at the backgate intersection for construction.
Through Thursday, the two inside lanes of U.S. 17 Bypass will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. north of the intersection at S.C. 707 as crews do drainage work. There also could be some lane closures on Socastee Highway near Coalition Drive.
The work is part of a $121.7 million project to build an overpass that eliminates the stoplight at Farrow Parkway/S.C. 707 and keeps U.S. 17 Bypass traffic moving. The improvements are expected to ease traffic congestion at the back gate, where roughly 70,000 vehicles travel through daily.
The project is expected to be complete by fall 2014.
