MYRTLE BEACH — After a more than two-year hiatus, the developers of a ropes course proposed in Myrtle Beach are moving forward with plans to bring the attraction to Ocean Boulevard.
Radical Ropes Adventure Park would be in the wooded property off 19th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach next to the Hampton Inn & Suites Myrtle Beach Oceanfront Resort. The Hampton Inn, at 1801 S. Ocean Blvd., owns the property.
Plans on the attraction stalled in 2011 because of financing reasons, when the Hampton Inn owners said they spent more than expected making improvements to the hotel.
A request for a final review of a 2,808-square-foot building, parking lot and landscaping was to be considered by the Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board on Thursday, but was removed from the agenda, said Heidi Soos with the city’s construction services department.
Dennis Springs, vice president with Pegram Associates and listed as the architect for the park, said they pulled the request from the agenda for the time being to make some changes to the plans.
Tom Moore, general manager of the Hampton Inn, told The Sun News in 2011 that he hoped the company would be able to take up the project again in a few years.
“They pulled it back out of the drawer and want to pursue it again,” Springs said. It’s still moving forward but at a slow pace.”
Springs said the plan would be a little different, deferring to property owner Buddy Lindsay. Lindsay did not immediately return a request for comment on Monday.
In 2011, the ropes course was expected to include six zip lines.
In March, Lindsay, who is president of Sonship Hospitality, announced that his company would develop a 14-story Homewood Suites Oceanfront Resort & Conference Center at 1805 S. Ocean Blvd. Construction is expected to begin on the 100-suite property in September with doors opening December 2014.
Lindsay also plans to develop a 150-room Residence Inn-SpringHill Suites Oceanfront Resort just north of Second Avenue Pier, with plans to open in summer 2015.
