— A 23-year-old woman, who is eight months pregnant, was arrested by Surfside Beach police this week after the officer saw her snorting drugs, according to a police report.

Laura Ashley Howell, 23, was charged with unlawful neglect of a child and possession of a controlled substance after officers were called about 4:40 a.m. Monday to 616 Third Ave. N., for a dispute, police said.

A 35-year-old man, who owns the house, took police inside and to the kitchen where an officer saw Howell snorting a line of blue powder from the counter, according to the report. The officer noted when Howell leaned up she nearly fell to the ground.

The officer saw a large pile of blue powder on the counter with Howell’s identification card in the middle, according to the report. Howell told the officer the powder was crushed Xanax and she did not have a prescription for it.

Howell told the officer she is eight months pregnant and the officer then took her into custody, according to the report.

Howell was being held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at J. Reuben Long Detention Center pending a bond hearing, according to jail records.
