Thanks to my village of Horry County for family success

June 19, 2013

“It takes a village to raise a child” is a true statement. As a single mom who raised three kids here in Horry County I would like to say thank you to Horry County, our village.

I moved here In 1994 and have lived in the same home for nearly 20 years and raised my three kids here. At one time or another my kids attended St. James Middle School, Forestbrook Elementary, Socastee Elementary School, Forestbrook Middle School and all three are graduates of Socastee High. My kids participated in school athletics, clubs, orchestra, chorus and the JB curriculum.

They utilized the local libraries and afterschool programs and rec centers, little league, dance lessons, gymnastics, karate, played basketball and baseball, went to proms and school trips to Florida, Washington DC and even Europe.

They worked at various restaurants and lifeguarded at local campgrounds and were involved in local youth groups and two of them got married on our beautiful beach.

And all three went on to college: one at Presbyterian College and Clemson University; one to College of Charleston; and now my youngest heads to Coastal Carolina University.

As my last child now graduates high school I felt compelled to compliment my village and tell all the parents out there to get involved with the schools and support all the teachers, counselors, support staff and principals. These people are professionals and a great resource for you.

When one of my kids gave me “fits,” I was emailing Jim Rogers, a parent-educator and fabulous mentor. I encourage parents to utilize the vast resources out there to help you raise successful adults.
