— A 66-year-old North Myrtle Beach man is in jail charged in a fatal shooting that occurred early Tuesday, Horry County police Sgt. Robert Kegler said.

Charles Eddie Smith is charged with murder and is accused of killing Melissa Ann Scott, 40 of Little River.

Scott is originally from North Carolina, but her family could not be reached Tuesday for comment.

Smith was taken into custody after Horry County police were called at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday to a home on Lincoln Heights Road in the Little River area for a shooting, Kegler said.

When police arrived they found Scott, who had suffered a gunshot wound to her chest. She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, Kegler said.

Detectives, who were called to the home learned that Smith and Scott got into an argument that ended with her being shot, Kegler said.

Smith called 911 and waited for police to arrive at the home and he was taken into police custody there.

He was being held Tuesday at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

A records check with the State Law Enforcement Division showed Smith does not have a criminal record.
