An Atlantic Beach man accused of holding his girlfriend under the water in the ocean remained jailed Thursday.

Billy Lynn Smith, 33, of North Myrtle Beach is charged with attempted murder. He was being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $30,000 bail.

Smith was arrested Wednesday in North Myrtle Beach.

Police were called to the 1700 block of Holly Drive about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday where a woman said she had been knocked to the ground and hit multiple times by Smith on the beach by Molly Darcy’s, according to an incident report.

She said Smith punched her in the face two or three times, pushed her face into the sand and then pulled her into the ocean and held her under the water for about 30 seconds.

When she stopped fighting back, she said Smith stopped the assault, the report said.

She ran to Molly Darcy’s for help and Smith fled the scene. He is also accused of taking her cellphone and $80 cash.

Police said the woman, whose age and hometown were not available, had apparent minor injuries.
