Head-on collision kills two in Conway

From Staff ReportsMay 5, 2013

— The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating a head-on collision that took place just after midnight Sunday that killed two Conway residents.

Michael Lee Baker, 39, of Conway, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Shane Michael Carter-Ward, 21, of Conway, was transported to Conway Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Tony Hendrick, deputy coroner for Horry County, said the cause of death for both drivers was blunt force trauma from the accident.

Baker was driving a 1998 Lexus northbound on Highway 905 when he crossed the center line and struck the 1987 Chrysler being driven in the southbound lane by Carter-Ward, according to Cpl. Sonny Collins with the highway patrol. The accident occurred near the highway’s intersection with Oak Log Lake Road.

Collins said Baker was not wearing a seatbelt while Carter-Ward was wearing a seatbelt.

The highway patrol continues to investigate the accident.
