— The identity of a 26-year-old Murrells Inlet man killed in a boating incident near Bird Island earlier this week was released Thursday, while state officials continue to investigate the circumstances of his death.

Kurtis Hutchison, 26, was identified Thursday as being the man who was killed Sunday in a boating crash, Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick said.

Hutchison died from massive trauma from being struck by a boat and its propellers, Hendrick said Thursday.

Officials with the state Department of Natural Resources continue to investigate Hutchison’s death, said Capt. Robert McCullough. No new information was available for release Thursday.

Emergency crews were called about 1:15 p.m. Sunday for a report that someone had been hit by a commercial vessel in the water near the North Carolina border. Horry County’s dive team, U.S. Coast Guard officials, Horry County police and DNR officers responded to the scene and spent several hours searching the water.

Officials found some human remains and sent them to a laboratory for DNA testing to confirm the person’s identity, Hendrick said. Those remains were Hutchison.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
