No charges will be filed against an elderly man who police suspected of firing gunshots from his Socastee home Wednesday when a neighbor went to check on him, Horry County police Sgt. Robert Kegler said Thursday.

Officers were called about 12 p.m. Wednesday to 217 Plantation Road inside Cimerron Plantation, which is located off S.C. 707, because shots had been fired, Kegler said.

When officers arrived they learned a neighbor, who lives in the area, went to check on an elderly man with unspecified medical issues that lives alone in that home, Kegler said. The neighbor had checked on the man in the past, but this time the man fired a gun toward the neighbor at the entrance to the home.

The neighbor left and called police, Kegler said. When police arrived the man had locked himself inside his home.

The man eventually surrendered to police about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for an evaluation, Kegler said. No one was hurt during the incident.

Members of the Horry County SWAT team and crime scene were at the location.
