A Conway man was arrested when a social worker at the Medical University of South Carolina called Horry County police to report possible abuse of a 1-year-old child, according to an incident report.

Lamar Jaquann Terrell, 22, is charged with unlawful neglect of a child or helpless person by a legal custodian. He was arrested Wednesday and remains jailed at J. Reuben Long Detention Center pending a bond hearing.

A 22-year-old Florence woman took the child to Conway Hospital about 5:30 a.m. on March 28 because girl had been vomiting with a high fever for a few days and also had a rash on her face and stomach, the report said. The woman told staff she hadn’t notified police because she wasn’t sure if the girl’s condition was intentional or accidental.

The child was transported by ambulance to MUSC where testing and scans revealed extensive bruising to the girl’s face and back, internal bruising to her sternum and rib cage and bite marks on her right arm.

The social worker said the medical evaluation showed the abuse may be intentional.
