— Police say a man placed a pet hamster in the oven and turned it on during a physical altercation with his girlfriend that began with an argument about Easter and led to the couple’s arrest.

The hamster was not harmed, police said.

David Wayne Bohnsack, 56, was charged with cruelty to animals and criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature. Kelly Jean Shields, 53, also was charged with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.

Myrtle Beach police responded to the 1400 block of Highway 15 at about 10 p.m. Saturday for a reported disturbance, according to an incident report.

Officers spoke to Shields, who said she was arguing with Bohnsack about Easter. She said they both were drinking alcohol at the time.

Shields told police Bohnsack turned on the oven and put their pet Albanian hamster inside. Shields removed the hamster from the oven and returned it to its cage, police said.

Shields said Bohnsack then grabbed her by her arm and slammed her against the wall and then went to another room. Bohnsack told police Shields grabbed a cast iron frying pan, followed him into the other room and hit him with the pan, injuring his arms.

Shields was treated at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center to be treated for a broken bone in her shoulder.

Police said Shields has been convicted of criminal domestic violence. Police said Bohnsack has a history of domestic violence charges but never has been convicted.
