MYRTLE BEACH — A car crash at the intersection of Pine Island Road and Robert Grissom Parkway early Friday morning in Myrtle Beach appears to be caused by the driver attempting to disarm a man who tried to rob him, according to a police report.
The crash happened at 3 a.m. Friday, and when Myrtle Beach police arrived they found the car off the road and in a ditch. The driver was still inside and taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment, the report stated.
Police met the victim at the hospital, who told authorities he drove to the Kangaroo gas station at 1009 Third Ave. South and saw a man outside the store.
The victim said the man asked him for a ride to the nearby Walmart, according to the report. The driver, who told police he sees the suspect outside the store all the time, said he would take him.
On the way, the suspect reportedly pulled a knife on the driver and demanded all his money. The victim struggled with the man to get control of the knife, which led to the crash, the report stated.
The suspect was gone once police arrived.
