‘Lend Me A Tenor’

The Atlantic Stage professional theater continues its fifth season with a farce. “Lend Me A Tenor” is set in 1934 with an opera company and renowned tenor ready to tackle “Othello,” but amid his tardy arrival, coupled with his jealous wife’s presence, the evening planned goes awry.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays through April 7 at Coastal Carolina University’s Myrtle Beach Education Center, at 79th Avenue North and U.S. 17 Bypass. Tickets are $27.50 general admission, $22.50 seniors (ages 55 and older)/educators/military, and $17.50 students.

Showgoers are asked to bring donations for resale at Atlantic Stage’s Treasure Festival yard sale benefit set for 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 20. Items of interest include, but are not limited to, household decorative items, appliances, clothing, books and toys. Larger items for donations are welcome 1-3 p.m. March 30 and April 6.

Two shows in Socastee

The heart of Socastee has two special events on stage:

• Students at Socastee High School will perform “Disney’s ‘Tarzan’ ” at 7 p.m. March 21-24 and 3 p.m. March 23-24. Tickets are $12 or $17. The story follows an orphaned baby boy who’s raised by a group of gorillas and deals with human encounters. It’s based on Edgar Rice Burrough’s “Tarzan of the Apes,” and the Disney animated film from 1999, for which Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be in My Heart” won an Oscar. • Catch “Elvis Uncensored” by Michael Sokolik Jr. with the Lucky Strike Band, Sugar Shakers duo dance team, Duane Farmer, Rinaldo Wright, and comedian Michael McDonough, in a benefit to help Morgen May, a local high schooler undergoing medical treatments for a disease. ‘Diggin’ It’ spring festival

Brookgreen Gardens celebrates spring’s arrival this week with its annual “Diggin’ It” festival 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 23, with many speakers, demonstrations and information tents.

Besides booths from such groups as the Native Plant Society and Master Gardeners, Brookgreen horticulture staff will have a tent in which visitors can “Build Your Own Terrarium.” Russell Unger, co-owner of R&R Edge, also will have a tool sharpening demo and session 1:30-3:30 p.m., and the public is welcome to bring clean tools such as pruners, shears, knives, shovels, spades and axes for free sharpening.

The fest is free with admission, which lasts seven days: $14 ages 13-64, $12 ages 65 and older, and $7 ages 4-12, and the gardens, on U.S. 17, between Murrells Inlet and Myrtle Beach, are open daily 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Also, all festivalgoers will receive a voucher for free admission April 13-14 during Brookgreen’s annual Plantacular Sale.

Students’ art at museum

Students from 13 schools are represented in the 12th annual Horry/Georgetown High Schools Juried Fine Art Exhibition. The showcase opens with a reception 1-3 p.m. March 24, including an awards ceremony at 1:30, at the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum, 3100 S. Ocean Blvd., Myrtle Beach.

The 92 works will then remain on display through April 21, at the museum, which is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays and 1-4 p.m. Sundays, with free admission.

Schools participating are Aynor, Carolina Forest, Conway, Georgetown, Green Sea Floyd, Loris, Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, St. James, Socastee and Waccamaw high schools, as well as Lowcountry Preparatory School and Horry County Schools’ Academy for the Arts, Sciences & Technology. The judge is Mary Ann Beckwith, an international experimental watercolor painter and retired art professor from Michigan Tech University. Ninety-two works of the 324 submitted were chosen for exhibit.
