Horry County police investigate work from home mail scam

Published: March 13, 2013

— Horry County police are investigating a work from home scam involving purchases made with stolen credit cards, according to Sgt. Robert Kegler.

The scam has been reported in Horry County and involves the suspects using Craiglist to facilitate it, Kegler said. The person posts as a business called Hand to Hand in Charlotte, N.C., which does not exist, and offers people money to work from home by receiving packages from them and then repackaging them and shipping them overseas.

The person pays for the shipping with the expectation they will be reimbursed along with a salary for doing the work, Kegler said. But the person isn’t paid for the work and police have discovered the packages were purchased using a stolen credit card.

Detectives with the Horry County Police Department’s Property Crimes Section are investigating cases involving this scam. Anyone with information about the scam or may have been a victim can call their local police department to report the incident.
