County chairman primary election

The primary election for Horry County Council chairman will be held Tuesday. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and those already in line when polls close will still be able to vote.

New voter ID laws took effect Jan. 1, requiring voters to show one of five forms if identification in order to vote: S.C. driver’s license, S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles identification card, voter’s registration card with picture, federal military identification with picture, or a U.S. passport.

Monday is the last day to vote absentee in the Horry County Registration and Elections Office, located at 1515 Fourth Ave. in Conway.

The five Republican candidates – County Councilman All Allen, former council chairman Liz Gilland, local businesswoman Debbie Harwell, former council member Mark Lazarus, and former council candidate Fonzie Lewis – are vying for the seat left vacant when Rep. Tom Rice was elected to serve in Congress last November. No Democrats are running.

Myrtle Beach turns 75 Tuesday

The city of Myrtle Beach will celebrate it’s 75th birthday with cake, punch and refreshments at 1 p.m. Tuesday before the City Council meeting.

The public is invited to attend the celebration, held in council chambers at the Ted. C. Collins Law Enforcement Center, 1101 N. Oak St. People who also have March 12 birthdays are invited to celebrate with the city.

St. Patrick’s Day events along the Grand Strand

There are a number of activities taking place along the grand strand this weekend.

Some events include the Gathering on the Green in downtown Conway at 5 p.m. on Friday and the Downtown Myrtle Beach St. Patrick’s Day Celebration held from noon to midnight Saturday.

March Madness

By Sunday evening, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament bracket will be filled with teams.

In between, expect plenty of chaos.

Conference tournaments continue this week, with the bigger leagues set to tip off. It will be a playoff atmosphere as teams look to pull upsets or improve their seeding for the NCAAs.

All the conference craziness concludes Sunday ahead of the NCAA tournament selection show (6 p.m., CBS), which will reveal who’s in and who’s out in the latest installment of March Madness.
