Horry County Council chair forums

Forum for Horry County Council chair candidates, 7 p.m. Wednesday, hosted by South Horry Citizens, a new grassroots group in southern Horry County. The forum will be held at the South Strand Recreation Center, 9650 Scipio Lane in Myrtle Beach.

The forum is open to the public and will feature a moderated discussion with written questions from audience members. For more information, contact Pat Shama at 839-1344.

On Friday, the Beach Dems will have all five candidates at their monthly breakfast, head at 8 a.m. at Akels Restaurant. For more information, call Sally Howard at 455-1936. Akels is located at the corner of 65th Ave. N. and Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach.

Big South tournament

The men’s and women’s Big South basketball tournaments will be held at Coastal Carolina’s The HTC Center this week.

Men’s play begins Tuesday and women’s action starts Wednesday.

The men’s final will be played at noon Sunday and televised on ESPN2. The women’s championship game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Walk to School Day

The S.C. Department of Transportation is urging all children to participate in the annual Walk to School Day.

The day is part of a broader effort by many schools and communities to help get students more active. Hundreds of students across the state are expected to participate. For more information, visit http://bit.ly/YBj1Go.

Movie night

“Wizard of Oz” fans, rejoice: a prequel is finally here. “Oz the Great and Powerful” hits the big screens this Friday. Starring James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis, the movie tells the story of how Oz came to the Emerald City in the first place. It’s rated PG and has a run time of just over two hours.

Shag Dance Championship

The National Shag Dance Championship starts Thursday and stretches through the weekend, ending Saturday.

The dancing takes place at Spanish Galleon in North Myrtle Beach and general admission tickets are still available for $15 on Thursday; $20 on Friday; and $25 on Saturday.
