HIGH POINT, N.C. — Coastal Carolina had its chances, but High Point was able to close the doors.
The Chanticleers closed to within a single possession twice in the final minute but were unable to get over the hump in a 58-53 loss to the Panthers in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Down 52-50 with just under a minute, High Point’s Stacia Robertson made a put-back to increase the lead to four. Robertson then blocked a Katelyn Connor shot at the other end leading to a Panthers position in which Tayler Tremblay was fouled while shooting.
She hit both free throws to increase the lead to 56-50. CCU’s Angelica Henry knocked down a 3-pointer on the next possession to cut the lead in half and once again make it a single-possession game. However, the Chants had a pair of costly turnovers in the final nine seconds, allowing High Point to escape with the win.
Coastal earned the eighth seed in the Big South Conference tournament next week. The Chants will take on ninth-seeded Gardner-Webb at 8 p.m. Wednesday at The HTC Center, the site of both the men’s and women’s tourneys.
