A 25-year-old man pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in connection with a fatal vehicle crash in October, according to court records.

Jared McRae Mahler, 25, of Spartanburg pleaded guilty to reckless homicide with death results caused by injury from a vehicle, according to court records. Circuit Court Judge Edward B. Cottingham sentenced Mahler to five years in prison and ordered him to pay court costs.

Mahler received credit for the time he has previously served. He had been held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $50,000 bond since his arrest in October.

An Horry County grand jury indicted Mahler on a felony driving under the influence with death results charge in connection with the crash.

Mahler told Myrtle Beach police he was from Ocoee, Fla., at the time of his arrest, but jail records showed Thursday he listed Spartanburg as his hometown.

The charge stemmed from 5:40 p.m. Oct. 22 when Myrtle Beach police were called for a vehicle crash on Kings Highway near 48th Avenue North. Jacob Young, 27, of Palmetto Bay, Fla., was killed in the crash from multiple trauma.

A heavily damaged Chevrolet Camaro was on the median, slammed against a tree.

Two vehicles were traveling at high rates of speed headed south on North Kings Highway when Mahler’s vehicle lost control and crashed, killing Young in the vehicle, Myrtle Beach police Capt. David Knipes said at the time of the crash.
