He said the decision to offer ashes outside of the church is an effort to reach those who ordinarily don't come to church services. "It's part of getting out in the community,'" he said from the 29th Avenue North coffee shop. "We used to open the doors the church and people would come. Well, we know times are changing and this is our way of acknowledging that. This is really one of those grass-roots efforts of Methodist churches around doing this - getting out in the community where the people are."
