Horry County grand jury indicts 25-year-old man in fatal Myrtle Beach crash

Published: February 13, 2013

— An Horry County grand jury indicted a 25-year-old man on a driving under the influence charge in connection with an October fatal crash in Myrtle Beach, according to court records.

Jared McRae Mahler, 25, of Spartanburg was indicted on a charge of felony DUI with death results, according to grand jury indictments released Friday.

Mahler remains jailed at J. Reuben Long Detention Center on $50,000 bail for the DUI charge. He also is being held without bail on a reckless homicide charge, according to jail records.

Mahler told Myrtle Beach police he was from Ocoee, Fla., at the time of his arrest, but jail records showed Tuesday he listed Spartanburg as his hometown.

The indictment stems from Oct. 22 when Myrtle Beach police were called around 5:40 p.m. for a vehicle crash on Kings Highway near 48th Avenue North. Jacob Young, 27, of Palmetto Bay, Fla., was killed in the crash and died from multiple trauma.

Myrtle Beach Police said two vehicles were traveling at high rates of speed headed south on North Kings Highway when Mahler’s vehicle lost control and crashed, killing Young.

Police continue to search for information about the second vehicle that left the scene following the crash.
