Horry County School Board taps new Myrtle Beach area board member

— Horry County school board members tapped Jimmy Washington Monday night to fill the unexpired term of the District 3 seat, which represents Carolina Forest and Myrtle Beach.

The seat was held previously by Joe DeFeo, who was elected countywide as board chairman in November.

Washington was one of five candidates interviewed during Monday’s board meeting before board members went into executive session to select the new representative. The other applicants were Blair Davis, Lorraine Mallon, Myers Rollins Jr. and Raymond Winters, and Washington won a runoff with Davis.

“I love bringing people together,” said Washington, an Horry County native, who is a restaurant manager and corporate trainer for Margaritaville restaurants. He has put two daughters through Horry County Schools and has served with the Grand Strand Housing Board, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, the Myrtle Beach Advisory Board and the Academy for the Arts, Science and Technology.

Washington is a member of Mount Olive AME Church, where he has been church treasurer for 17 years. He also is a member of the Sons of Allen, which is involved with schools and gives a $1,000 annual scholarship. He told the board that the top three issues facing schools today are school safety, overcrowding in some schools and attaining a balanced budget.

The board moved ahead with its selection so the new board member can attend the board’s retreat, which will be held Saturday. Washington will be sworn in at the Feb. 25 board meeting.
