Man allegedly assaults woman after arguing about cheese

A Myrtle Beach man faces criminal domestic violence charges allegedly after arguing with a woman about cheese Friday night, police said.

Craig Paul Rakoski, 46, was charged with criminal domestic violence-second offense in 10 years. He was being held at Myrtle Beach jail without bond.

According to a Myrtle Beach police report, officer responded to the Wayfarer Motel located at 311 N. Ocean Blvd at about 9 p.m. Friday for a reported criminal domestic assault.

Officers spoke with a 48-year-old woman who said she and Rakoski were in bed when they began to argue about cheese. The victim told police she said she did not like cheese. She told police that he suddenly grabbed her around her neck, let go, then began to punch her in the face. She said she and Rakoski are common-law married.

Police said Rakoski refused to provide any information about the incident and “at one point denied even knowing the victim.” Officers said they arrested him because the victim’s injuries were consistent with her story and Rakoski provided no counter story.

Robotics competition coming to Myrtle Beach Convention Center

Nine Horry County schools will be among the 65 teams of high school students from 12 states and Brazil competing in the 10tha annual Palmetto Regional First Robotics Competition, according to a press release.

The event is taking place Feb. 28 through March 2 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

The challenge for the 65 teams competing is to build and program a working robot from a 75-pound box of electronic parts, gears and other pieces without any instructions.

Each team received their box on Jan. 5 and had to complete their robot in six weeks.

This year’s robot challenge is Ultimate Ascent, in which the machines score points by throwing Frisbees into goals on a playing field, the release stated.

Rolling Thunder to honor women in military

The local chapter of the Rolling Thunder will honor women in the military in April. The group is holding a ceremony at the Grand Strand Senior Center in Myrtle Beach on April 6 at 1 p.m. called “Salute to Women of the Military, Past and Present.”

It’s the second year the event has been held and is meant to recognize women who have served in the military.

Registration by March 15 is required by calling 910-579-3668.

Get city parking decals

The city will soon offer the two-year parking decals for 2013 and 2014. Letters will be sent to the owners of vehicles that are registered in city limits.

The decals allow residents to park their vehicles for free at the city’s parking meters, in the Pavilion Parking Garage and at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Eligibility for decals is tied to where the vehicle “lives” – it is eligible if it is registered inside city limits and city property taxes have been paid on it. Properly registered golf carts also are eligible for parking decals

The parking meter season begins March 1 and runs through Sept. 30.

Additionally, all vehicles with valid handicapped plates or hand-tags and vehicles with valid Purple Heart, Disabled American Veteran or Medal of Honor license plates already are able to park free.
