U.S. is doing just fine

Re Jan. 28 letter by Robert C. Brand, “America has lost its soul”

I'm former teacher of American history and love this country, even though I am not a citizen. Robert C. Brand declares that this wonderful land has lost its soul. Let me disagree.

He states that 53 percent of the people are self-absorbed, ignorant, fools with no conscience. He states that pseudo-citizens have elected a president who should be impeached for high crimes. Reading further into his message, since I have no idea what a pseudo-citizen may be, he mentions gays, lesbians, women, union members. Not many real citizens left to count, then.

As for Medicare, subsidized housing, welfare, food stamps, he says, in effect “don't feed the animals.” Not his kind of folks, we may guess.

Let me tell him about this land he lives in.

Here there is real freedom, to vote, to like and dislike, to worship or not, to read and watch what we want, from Honey Boo Boo to the Boston Symphony, to travel to the ends of this country, to buy or reject politicians' messages and most of all, to live our lives in joy and harmony.

The USA has a wonderful soul. Robert C. Brand says he is numb. I can agree with that, at least.

His guy lost, but, hey, the US of A will be just fine.

The writer lives in Myrtle Beach.
