Myrtle Beach police search for suspect in robbery attempt, machete attack

Published: January 23, 2013

— A 23-year-old man defended himself from a man who tried to rob him and attacked him with a machete in Myrtle Beach, according to a police report.

The victim told officers he was outside The Barrell Bar and Grill at 2303 S. Kings Highway about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday when a man walked up from the rear of the parking lot and demanded money, police said.

The victim said the suspect, who “spoke with a country accent, but used street slang,” pulled a black machete from his pants when the victim refused to give him money, according to the report. The victim said he put his hands up to keep from getting hit in the head by the machete.

The victim said after the suspect swung the machete, he was able to punch the suspect in the face and push the suspect away from him, according to the report. The victim said he ran to his friend’s car and they left.

The victim was cut on the hand and received stitches at Conway Medical Center, which is where they drove after the attack, according to the report. The victim said he had never seen the suspect before the incident.

Detectives are investigating.
