I, and I suspect many others, disagree with the editor's spin Thursday on honoring the U.S. flag. The only part in which you even come close to being correct is about it being a symbol. What you forget is that literally hundreds of thousands of men and women of this nation have given their lives for.this symbol, this "piece of colored cloth.”

I put in a career in the Army, which included five campaigns in Europe, and I can tell you with absolute certainty, if something like this had taken place 60 or 70 years ago the school would not be trying to decide whether or not to fire the teacher who stomped on our flag.

This is another example of values, long held close to the hearts of many generations of Americans, being sloughed off as being outmoded in today's society, not to be honored, but to be trampled on. Your opinion regarding this incident is unbelievable and troubling..

That piece of "colored cloth" you talk about is, in large part, the glue that has held this great country of ours together for 237 years. The young man who showed his disrespect for our flag may consider himself lucky if he doesn't wind up flipping hamburgers.
