Pawleys Island police have contacted the S.C. Department of Natural Resources after a large amount of fish washed on shore on the island’s south end, said Police Chief Mike Fanning.
Fanning said the fish are Menhaden fish, and there were likely thousands on the coast.
Earlier Tuesday, he said a marine biologist at Hobcaw Barony called because a large amount of fish had washed up on DeBordieu and wanted to know if Pawleys Island had a similar situation.
At the time, the answer was no.
But, a few hours later there were thousands of fish on the shore.
“While I was patrolling down there, the tide went out and deposited all these fish,” Fanning said.
He said DNR has been called for both, and the marine biologist suspected low oxygen levels in the waters just offshore.
Fanning expects the fish should be cleared by the water by tomorrow.
“We’ll just wait for the tide to come in and let mother nature handle it,” Fanning said. “It stinks down there though.”
