MYRTLE BEACH — A wax museum that opened in the 1960s in Hollywood is planning to branch out to Myrtle Beach.

Hollywood Wax Museum is working to move into the former NASCAR Cafe building off U.S. 17 Bypass and 21st Avenue North.

Officials won’t say when the attraction might open. It still must be approved by the city’s Community Appearance Board, which will have an early discussion about it Thursday. No plans have yet been submitted to the city, so the earliest the board could vote on it is next month.

Aileen Stein, the museum’s spokeswoman, declined to give specifics about the project, saying it’s still going through the approval process. Burroughs & Chapin Co. Inc., which owns the building, declined to comment.

“This is really preliminary,” Stein said.

The attraction has a dramatic design, with skyscraper buildings flanked by a King Kong, a cluster of Mount Rushmore-style faces and, of course, the trademark Hollywood sign.

The Myrtle Beach City Council got a first look at the design Tuesday.

“The response was favorable,” city spokesman Mark Kruea said. “It’s an exciting design.”

This would be Hollywood Wax Museum’s fourth location in the United States. It also has museums in Hollywood; Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and Branson, Mo.

A Pat Boone theater had planned to move into the building at 21st Avenue North, but that project ran into repeated delays and never opened.
