Thursday’s area sports briefs

From staff reportsJanuary 10, 2013

— In a matchup of what could be the region championship, Socastee’s wrestling team prevailed over North Myrtle Beach 36-33 on Thursday.

“In the region, we only wrestle one time,” Braves coach Jeff Gibbins said. “So, every region bout is very, very important. Every time we wrestle, we are wrestling for a region championship.”

It was a heated contest throughout the night as both teams ended up losing team points because of penalities. The Chiefs lose of three team points hurt most after they had their 160-pound wrestler disqualified. Socastee also lost a point for an unsportsmanlike after a wrestler threw his head gear.

John Leggett, Tommy Lazaroff, Kyle Burton, Justin Knipper, Jordan Hodge, Mikel Nelson and Logan Gammons all picked up wins for the Braves.

Hampton Harmon, Eric Baker, Mikahal Blahas, Harrison Smith, Alex Lewis, Brandon Moore and Jared Woody each had a win for North Myrtle Beach.
