Register trailers instead of raising gas tax

Published: January 5, 2013

Shame on the group that calls itself the South Carolina Alliance to Fix Our Roads for the idea that it keeps trying to push through of raising the state tax on gasoline to fix our roads.

Instead of that why don’t they push the idea of taxing all of the thousands of utility trailers that are using our roads and not paying a red cent in taxation to the state? South Carolina could be collecting millions and millions of dollars each year if they would start registering all of these trailers. Thousands of them are being used by landscapers that are running businesses for profit. Some of these trailers are 25 feet or more in length, and should be paying a registration fee to use our roads.

I am sure that many of these people are paying little or no taxes to the state for the money that they are making from landscaping. It is one of the many professions that can get away without paying their fair share of taxes to the state .They are not regulated in any way.

One of the main reasons that our senior citizens move down to South Carolina is that the taxes on gasoline are cheaper than they are in other states. Remember, they are on a fixed income and cannot be hit with these higher gasoline taxes. It is bad enough that the federal government is going to play around with their Social Security payments and raising their Medicare payments without increasing the taxes on gasoline.
