Jenny Sanford would have made fine senator

Published: January 4, 2013

There was much discussion regarding the filling of Jim DeMint’s seat following his resignation, including Mrs. Jenny Sanford’s potential.

Having been Gov. Sanford’s choice for the education commissioner’s position for South Carolina, I began a friendship with the Sanfords that became like a family connection. My wife Peggy and I enjoyed many visits during campaigns in their company as well at several meals and occasional overnights and breakfast at the mansion with the entire family.

During that time we came to know both Sanfords very well. If Peggy were still alive today she would agree with me that Jenny Sanford was the thinker, the family memory, and the strength of and for the family. She laid the groundwork for the campaigns while Mark became the executor. The thinking was done by Jenny and Mark did the presentations. A great team.

There is no question in my mind that Jenny would have made a great addition to the Senate and still could if she decided to run.

Her stamina in taking care of four very able young sons (now young men) is remarkable. I have no doubt she could prove to be a major influence to Congress and our country.

The writer lives in Pawleys Island.
