CONWAY — Twenty-six teams from 12 Horry County elementary and middle schools as well as Waccamaw Intermediate and the Mitney Project in Georgetown will compete Friday in the First LEGO League qualifying event at Coastal Carolina University.
The First LEGO League is a worldwide competition sponsored by the LEGO corporation and other companies to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders.
During the event, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Kimbel Arena at Coastal Carolina University. The winner of the event at CCU will advance to the state competition this spring. There are thousands of teams competing worldwide.
The competition includes a LEGO robot design and challenge competition, a research project on an original idea for helping senior citizens and a team work activity.
Louis Rubbo, assistant professor in CCU’s Department of Chemistry and Physics, is the tournament director.
