MYRTLE BEACH — In what was just a quarterfinal game of the Beach Ball Classic between Whitney Young (Ill.) and Bishop Gorman (Nev.), it sure did have a championship intensity and atmosphere.
In the end, the Dolphins proved their mettle by closing out the Gaels 76-67.
It was back and forth until Whitney Young had a lead and Bishop Gorman had to foul and the Dolphins knocked down their free throws.
Paul White led Whitney Young with a game-high 23 points but he wasn’t the lone Dolphin to score in double figures. Miles Reynolds (10), L.J. Peake (15), Jahlil Okafor (20) also scored in double digits.
The Dolphins had a 10-point lead at halftime but saw that go away when Bishop Gorman tied the game with five minutes expired in the second half. Whitney Young excelled mightly on the inside game with 38 points in the paint.
The Gaels were led by Rashad Muhammad’s 22 points, while teammates Trey Kennedy added 14 and Noah Robotham finished with 16.
