— Tom Rice’s Dec. 31 resignation as chairman of Horry County Council has set the timeline for when a special election will take place to fill his seat.

Sandy Martin, director of Horry County Voter Registration, said the filing deadline will run from Jan. 18 to Jan. 28. After, a primary election will be held March 12, followed by the general election on April 30.

Rice, who was elected as the U.S. representative for the new 7th Congressional District, announced his resignation at the end of Tuesday’s County Council meeting.

So far, three people have publicly announced their intentions to seek the office. They are: Horry County Councilman Al Allen; former council chairwoman Liz Gilland and local businessman Mark Lazarus.

Rice was elected as County Council chairman in 2010. The person elected will fill a term that expires in 2014.
