CONWAY — Santee Cooper announced Monday afternoon that it will retire the two coal-fired units at its Grainger generation plant in Conway on Dec. 31.

The plant has been idle since last spring, but the announcement marks the company’s formal decision that the plant will no longer generate electricity.

The company has transferred most of the Grainger plant’s employees, but Santee Cooper spokeswoman Mollie Gore said some company personnel will still be on site to operate some support facilities such as ash ponds associated with the plant, move equipment that will be relocated elsewhere and comply with regulatory duties as part of the plant closing process.

The announcement also announced the retirement of Santee Cooper’s Jeffries plant’s four coal generators in Monck’s Corner on Dec. 31.
