Horry County Notebook | Revised return dates coming to Horry County library system

— The Horry County Memorial Library system is revising its dates for when certain materials have to be returned once they’re checked out.

Beginning Jan. 2, most materials must be returned after 21 days, which is a week earlier than the previous deadline.

County officials say this will allow more materials to be used by more patrons in a timelier manner.

Here are the library materials and their deadline dates to return after they’ve been checked out: new books, 14 days; DVDs, seven days; audio books and music CDs, 21 days; all other books, 21 days.

This will apply to Horry County’s 10 area libraries, which has a collection of more than 389,623 items. During the last year, the library system circulated 939,393 items and more than 12,290 library cards have been issued.

Huggins Landing Road closed

Huggins Landing Road, which is off Pee Dee Road in Galivants Ferry, has been temporarily closed to through traffic for bridge maintenance. However, residents along Huggins Landing will be able to access the road. Bridge maintenance is expected to take several months.

Because Huggins Boat Landing is located at the end of Huggins Landing Road, the boat landing will also be closed to boaters wanting to launch from that location. The next closest boat landings are Gunters Lake Landing, at 4219 Gunters Lake Road in Galivants Ferry, and Sandy Bluff Landing, at 10650 Church Landing Road in Nichols.

Community Development Block Grant workshops announced

The deadline to file sub-recipient agency applications with the Horry County Community Development Block Grant office for the 2013 cycle is 2 p.m. Feb. 1, according to a news release.

Funding is provided through a federal block grant program to assist in developing a viable urban community by expanding opportunities for decent housing, suitable living environments and needed public services.

To assist with the applications, the county’s CDBG office will hold three classes at 1515 Fourth Ave., Conway, on the following dates: Dec. 13 from 9 to 11 a.m.; Jan. 8 from 2 to 4 p.m.; and Jan. 10 from 9 to 11 a.m.
