‘Fall Art Show’ at cafe

Collectors Café & Art Gallery has opened its “Fall Art Show” through Feb. 15, with more than 100 works by about 20 artists, many of them local.

The roster comprises photography by watercolors by John Bickle, Suzanne Carlson and Suzanne Gaff, Lowcountry oils by Cedar, oils by Michael Craig and Thomas Davis, landscape oils by Rob Crombie, folk art and reflective acrylics by Kimberley Dawn, charcoal drawings by Karen Edgar, body sculptures by Lawrence Feir, acrylic pop art by Katy Gilbert, surrealism by Bobbie Holt, and Picasso-inspired abstract acrylic portraits by Ronald Jones.

Red wolves return

The Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center, 5821 U.S. 17 N., Awendaw, has two more reasons to howl, with two newly arrived red wolves the public is welcome to observe.

The 4-year old sisters come from the Salisbury Zoological Park in Maryland. Since 1997, the Sewee Center has housed the red wolf, a canine species native to the Southeast. Data show, with a wild population of about 300, the red wolf is one of the most endangered animals in the world.

Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge ( www.fws.gov/caperomain), between Georgetown and Mount Pleasant, has played an integral role in the recovery of the wolf since Bulls Island was chosen as an experimental release site by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. From 1987 to 2005, 26 red-wolf pups were born there.

The Sewee complex, about 35 miles south of Georgetown and a center for Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge and Francis Marion National Forest, is one of 40 captive breeding facilities nationwide for the red wolf.

New youth orchestra season

The Long Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra kicks off a new season of concerts next Thursday.

This benefit for the Carolina Forest Rotary Club, in “An Evening of Opera and Ballet,” is at 7:30 p.m. at Myrtle Beach High School, on Grissom Parkway, between 29th and 38th avenues North. Tickets are $10.

The ensemble will be joined by students from the Coastal Carolina University Vocal Department, directed by David Bankston, performing repertoire from Mozart’s “Magic Flute” and “Marriage of Figaro,” and youth from the Myrtle Beach School of Performing Arts in excerpts of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite.”

Two other concerts, both for free and at 7:30 p.m. at the high school, are Feb. 13 in a Valentine’s/romantic theme, including music from “Romeo and Juliet,” and April 25, featuring annual Concerto Competition winners as guest soloists.
