Don’t like America? Pack up and move

November 15, 2012

I have been noticing a plethora of letters and emails from people declaring how ashamed they are to be American, how embarrassed they are of America, all because the democratic process didn’t work out the way that they would have liked in the recent election.

If you despise this great country so much, if you truly hate living here and enjoying our many freedoms, may I suggest packing up and moving? I hear that Somalia still has an "anything goes" kind of feel, or perhaps somewhere in Eastern Europe where a gun and money gets you more than voting and justice.

Not moving? I didn’t think so. Instead of being ashamed of America, these people should be ashamed of themselves. Democracy is nothing to be ashamed of; it is something to be proud of, not embarrassed by. Patriotism is not a lapel pin and is not something that you are just because you belong to a group with the word “Patriots” in the name.
