Christmastime brings more than visits with Kris Kringle and special concerts and festivals; the season also heats up with parades and tree lighting ceremonies.

The Bucksport community will have its 35th annual Thanksgiving parade next Thursday, stepping off at 11 a.m. from the James R. Frazier Community Center. Lindell Sherman said his family was among the group that helped the tradition get going in that part of Horry County.

Sherman remembered how his wife of 44 years and their four now grown children, who all graduated from Conway High School, joined other Buckpsort residents in cooking up their tradition on the late 1970s.

“We said, ‘Let’s try it,’ ” he recalled. “Nothing was going on around Thanksgiving, and everybody has time to eat and watch football.”

Seeing people team up to decorate and fill floats “set off the momentum of the parade,” Sherman said, crediting Boy Scout troops, Shriners, Knights of Columbus and other participants who return year after year to march.

“It’s really been an exciting day,” Sherman said, reiterating the invitation for any local marching band or company mascot to fall in line. “It’s open to anybody and everybody.”

He called the parade “a blessing for young kids” as well as “the old folks, the seniors who run it.”

In North Myrtle Beach, Barefoot Landing will kick off the season formally on Friday with its “Lighting of the Landing” celebration.

Kim Kelley, marketing director at Barefoot Landing, said the complex has celebrated Santa Claus’ arrival every year it has been in business for more than two decades. This also marks the second year the holly, jolly fellow will arrive in the Barefoot Princess riverboat, with fireworks.

Kelley said the cruise lets Barefoot Landing highlight its sightseeing and dinner cruise operator “as well as draw some attention to other parts of Barefoot.”

Santa will greet people and other boaters on the neighboring Intracoastal Waterway, Kelley said, then once on site, he’ll make his way up to Barefoot Landing’s carousel area and “light the big tree there.”

“This is more just of a festival kind of holiday celebration,” Kelley said, crediting Barefoot staff and store personnel who start decorating about Nov. 1.

“We’re planning it at the end of summer,” she said. “You go from one season to the next. We have a lot of tenants who get involved. ... With the lake and the waterway, it’s just a really pretty holiday setting.”

Seeing temperatures turn south just a tad might not hurt, either.

“We’re kind of hoping to get kind of nip in the air,” Kelley said, “but not too cold.”
