Lack of respect for flag during national anthem disturbing

November 14, 2012

As I viewed the picture on the front page of Saturday’s paper I couldn’t help but feel saddened for us by our lack of respect for the flag and what it stands for. The picture depicted the arena of the new HTC Center and stated that a sold out crowd was standing for the national anthem. I looked around that picture and noted that though some had their hands over their hearts, others did not.

Coaches, players, mascot, fans and even some soldiers at the bottom of the photo seemed to just be standing around. Have we become that apathetic in our patriotism? Do we need another 9/11 to rally round the flag for a short while? Our military is currently deployed all around the world, away from family, enduring hardships and sacrificing their lives to protect our right to stand and salute that flag. Let’s not forget our national symbol and pay it the respect that 236 years has earned.
