Lack of patriotism with American flag

November 7, 2012

Privileged to pick up my granddaughter at St. James High School, I watched as the ROTC Color Guard prepared to retrieve the colors from the front flag staff. While the colors were being lowered, I alighted from my vehicle and placed my hand over my heart.

As the colors were being folded, a young man who had also halted, asked, “Did you serve?” I replied affirmatively and he thanked me for my service. I am certain that there were other former servicemen who just remained sitting in their vehicles.

Do we now just permit only our active duty personnel the privilege of paying respect to our flag?
