Breezy and cool weather, large turnout expected for Tuesday’s election

Published: November 5, 2012

By Friday, 14,250 of the 170,855 voters in Horry County had cast absentee ballots, said Lisa Bourcier, Horry County spokeswoman. That compares to about 13,000 absentee ballots cast in the 2008 election.

That doesn’t include those who turned out Monday to turn in their absentee ballots. Sandy Martin, Horry County’s voters registration and election director, said the office was busy most of the day with people lining up to vote absentee in person.

The scene was similar Monday in Georgetown County, which had received 4,400 absentee ballots by Friday. Statewide, absentee voting hit a record high after surpassing votes cast early four years ago. The state Election Commission said about 358,000 people had voted absentee by 11:15 a.m. Monday. That exceeds the high set in 2008 by more than 15,000 voters.
