Personal experience with dogs’ abilities

Re Oct. 20 column by Bob Bestler, “Dog’s nose interests science”

I got a chuckle out of a recent column by Bob Bestler concerning a dog’s nose. Several years ago I flew into Mexico City and while waiting for my luggage a security official and his dog came up to me and the dog was sniffing my bag.

The official asked me if I had any fruit in my bag. Apparently this particular dog was trained to detect fruit. I was aware that you cannot bring fresh fruit into the country. In fact I had had a banana in the bag that I had eaten on the plane before I entered Mexico. The dog still picked up on the scent. The dog did his job well. What a nose.
