MYRTLE BEACH — It’s about to get funnier at Broadway at the Beach.
Carolina Comedy Club plans to open March 1 in the former Stool Pigeons spot with performances by stand-up comedians and a local improv group.
The 150-seat club, which also will include a Backstage Bar & Grill on what used to be Stool Pigeon’s patio, is the first comedy venue at Broadway, tucked in Celebrity Square among the hub of nightclubs. Renovations of the space are expected to start next week.
“It’s just an amazing location,” said Jeff Martin, the club’s operations manager and former owner of Standup Carolina comedy club in Murrells Inlet, which closed in December. “Celebrity Square needed something more than a nightclub.”
Comedian Todd Yohn is set to perform during the opening week, Martin said. Other comedians haven’t yet been lined up, but could include some of those that had performed at Martin’s Murrells Inlet club, including Ralphie May, Tom Green, Pauly Shore and Gallagher, Martin said. The new club also will invite comedians from “Chelsea Lately” to perform, he said, though no appearances have yet been locked down.
“We are still in the planning stages of the venue,” Martin said. “We are still trying to hash out who our big comedians are going to be.”
In addition to the stand-up comedians, the Carolina Improv Co., a local group, will perform a family-friendly “Who’s Line Is It Anyway” show four to five times a week.
Tickets will cost $15, though likely will be a bit more on the nights when the bigger-name comedians perform, Martin said.
Martin has partnered with Larry Frakes, owner of One Stop Party Shop, to open the new club. The pair also are partners in Karma Nightlife, a teen club on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach.
Stool Pigeons closed in September after a more than 15-year run at Broadway at the Beach.
The comedy club gives Broadway a new type of entertainment to offer visitors, officials said.
“We like to bring in new and exciting things every year, but we’ve never been the permanent home to a comedy club,” O’Neil McCoy, Broadway’s general manager, said in a news release.
