Firefighter competition returning to Myrtle Beach next month

Published: October 29, 2012

Firefighters will flock to Myrtle Beach next month for a popular competition that ESPN once called the toughest two minutes in sports.

The Scott Safety World Challenge Combat Firefighter Challenge will take place Nov. 12 through Nov. 17 at Broadway at the Beach, in the parking lot near Hard Rock Cafe.

Hundreds of firefighters and their relatives from throughout the United States, Canada and other countries come to the area for the event, where firefighters go through a series of work-related challenges wearing their usual gear, including climbing a five-story tower; hoisting and dragging hoses and rescuing a life-sized dummy.

Wildcard competitions will take place Nov. 12 through Nov. 15, followed by individual and team finals Nov. 16 then the relay and tandem finals Nov. 17.

This is the third consecutive year the event has taken place in Myrtle Beach, moving here in 2010 from Las Vegas, which had hosted the challenge for three years on Fremont Street.
