FLORENCE — Thursday’s Georgetown-Wilson matchup provided plenty of fireworks during the game and also provided some after the final whistle blew.
Georgetown quarterback Caleb Hughes threw for 244 yards and four touchdowns as the Bulldogs defeated the Tigers 49-42 at Memorial Stadium. With the win, Georgetown wrapped up the third seed from Region VII-AAA.
But the game was filled with several penalties and unsportsmanlike plays, which resulted in Georgetown running off the field and not shaking hands following the game.
The biggest incident happened in the third quarter, which resulted in Wilson’s Donte McCoy’s getting ejected. The Tigers were called for offsides on the play but McCoy, who was blitzing, came through and delivered a shot to Bulldogs guard Asa Holmes.
Holmes remained on the ground for several minutes. Hughes also was hit on the play.
Georgetown coach Bradley Adams wouldn’t comment on that play, but defended his decision not to shake hands.
“That was my decision not to shake hands,” Adams said. “We try to teach our kids character and we are going to have character. We didn’t want anything to get out of hand. We love our kids and we are going to take care of them.”
Wilson coach Chad Eaddy defended McCoy and was upset that Georgetown didn’t shake hands after the game.
“They told me my player’s intent was malicious. How is that malicious when he is coming full speed on a blitz? He wasn’t doing anything dirty but we are characterized a certain way,” Eaddy said. “… But I lined my team up to shake hands. We just lost on senior night and had thirty-some seniors who just played their last game. So that’s classless on his part.
“But they are in our region and we will see them again. Maybe it will become a real rivalry game.”
The postgame incidents marred an entertaining game in which the two teams combined for 893 yards and saw the Tigers nearly rally from a 21-point second-half deficit.
Trailing 42-21, the Tigers mounted a comeback as T.J. Frederick hit Brandon Johnson on an 18-yard touchdown to get the Tigers within 42-28 with 48 second left in the third.
Georgetown fumbled on the ensuing kickoff and the Tigers recovered on the Bulldogs’ 40. On Wilson’s next play, Frederick hit Christian Bruce on a 40-yard touchdown to get the Tigers within 42-35 with 38 seconds left in the third.
Wilson had a chance to tie it midway through the fourth quarter and got down to the Georgetown 19, but Frederick was stopped a yard short of the first down on a fourth-down run to the 12.
Georgetown capitalized on the momentum and went on a 10-play, 88-yard scoring drive, capped off by Hughes’ 39-yard pass to Tarik Tucker to make it 49-35 with 4:37 left.
Wilson answered when Frederick hit Bruce on a 29-yard pass to get the Tigers within 49-42 with 2:23 left.
But Georgetown recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.
Running back Julian Lunsford led the Bulldogs with 128 yards rushing and two touchdowns. A.J. Walker caught seven passes for 136 yards and had two TDs.
Georgetown will face the Marlboro/Manning winner in the first round of the playoffs next week.
“We are very happy to be going. This is another step up for us,” said Adams, a former West Florence assistant. “We were the No. 3 seed this year and fourth last year. Hopefully, we can make some noise. I feel like if we can play offensively like we did tonight we will be OK. We just got to shore up some things defensively.”
