Wednesday’s area sports briefs

Zack Byrd of Murrells Inlet and former Coastal Carolina player Charlie Winegardner are 1-under par, while Patrick Lundy of Little River and former CCU player Tripp McAllister of Lake City are over par after the opening round of the first stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament at Florence Country Club.

Byrd and Winegardner are tied for 22nd, Lundy is tied for 37th at 1-over 71 and McAllister is tied for 45th at 72. The top 17 players and ties after four rounds will advance to the second stage of Q-School.

Byrd’s 69 included bogeys on his first and last holes, as well as four birdies between holes 5 and 14. Winegardner was 2 over through eight holes and birdied five of his final 10 holes. Lundy birdied his final hole to reach 1 under, and McAllister was 2 under through five holes but made four bogeys between holes 6 and 13.

Pro golf

Myrtle Beach resident Yoshio Yamamoto shot a 71 and is in sixth place (138) after the second round of the NGA Tour Carolina Winter Series event at Black Bear golf course. Yamamoto is six strokes behind co-leaders Chip Deason and Jesse Massie.

Murrells Inlet resident J.P. Longueil is a stroke behind Yamamoto in seventh place.

High School Volleyball

•  (At) Waccamaw 3, Dillon 2 | Melaina Moore posted an impressive 18 kills as Dillon hung in there for five sets, but the Warriors outlasted the Wildcats, winning 25-27, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17, 15-8.

Sienna Herndon had four aces for Waccamaw.
